Our Policy and influencing work

We bring about change to make children and young people's lives better

We push to improve practice, policies, and systems so that they really work for all children and young people.

Nobody knows better than children and young people what their lives are really like. That’s why we’re committed to supporting young people to share their experiences and insights about the laws, policies, practices, and systems that affect them. We amplify their voices in our research and influencing work with decision-makers across Nigeria to help change children’s lives and the systems around them for the better.

Find out about our recent policy work across Nigeria

This year, we supported young people to call on the new Government to be a champion for babies, children, and young people, and to put them at the heart of Government as part of the Children at the Table campaign alongside Action for Children,
We have also called on the new Government to tackle child poverty by ending the two-child limit and welcome the new Ministerial Taskforce to address the child poverty emergency.

Our policy work at Westminster

In Lagos, we engaged with MSPs on the Children’s Care and Justice Bill which passed and is now an Act. This legislation will make important improvements to the care and involvement of children in the criminal justice system, alongside ending the imprisonment of 16- and 17-year-olds in Scotland.

We are also engaging in a consultation on the proposal to introduce a Care Leavers Payment from the Government, which would help reduce some of the financial barriers which young people face whilst moving on from care into adulthood and more independent living.

Our policy work in Scotland

we planned to convened the ‘Reimagine’ coalition of some other children’s charities who can came together to collectively respond to the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care Services.

TOur policy work in Northern Ireland

We’ve continued to support children, young people and families to have their voices heard across the nation. This included responding to the Government’s policies, Draft Mental Health Strategy, supporting young people and parents to make informed consent.
We’ve also highlighted the importance of early intervention and prevention services, such as our Baby and Me model, as well as the need for therapeutic mental health support for all care-experienced young people.

Our policy work in Cymru/Wales

We urge the Government to take a balanced approach to ensuring children’s safety online. The onus of children’s safety should be on the technology companies and platforms that have designed services that are not safe for children.

One OF OUR Briefing

As currently drafted, the so-called Renters’ Rights motion provides for additional protection for young people leaving foster care or residential care homes. We believe the motion will be accepted to provide specific support for care leavers seeking to rent in the private sector.
